Pedro Peduzzi reports from Agência Brasil

The Brazilian recovered $23 billion in unpaid taxes, fines, and interest in this first half year. Of the total, $1.26 billion stem from funds related to the probes conducted under Operation Car Wash. After unveiling the report with the data, Iágaro Jung Martins, subsecretary for inspection at the Federal Revenue Service, said that this was the second best first half year in the history of inspections at the Service.

“The auditors had fire in their belly and delivered quite remarkable results, the main of them being the massive volume of tax credit for social security, up 54%. At a moment when the country is discussing a pension reform, the Revenue Service, responsible for half of this problem, is providing the answer,” he said.

A total of 6,161 companies were brought under investigation in 2017, along with 195.5 thousand natural persons.

Operation Car Wash

There are still 177 legal and natural persons being investigated under Operation Car Wash. “Figures are expected to rise to some $4.7 billion by the end of the year,” he said.
